The Smell of Theocracy in the Morning

funny thing: in SLC, any establishment that wishes to serve alchohol has to be considered, legally speaking, a private club whose members pay a fee to gain entrance. this is how the mormons reconcile the sale of alcohol under their very noses with their desire to squash anything that a libertine might partake of. so before we entered the bar on friday night my brother had to join the private club and invite us in as his guests.

sort of like the mormon belief that only men go directly to heaven -- women have to be called by their husbands.

"experiment once and you're a poet -- twice and you're a libertine."
