interesting op-ed in the LA times (for my money the second best editorial regime in the country) today. claims that because LA has literary amnesia, it is in fact the pefect place to be a writer:
"WHEN SOMEONE in Los Angeles asks what you do and you answer that you're a writer, the next question is invariably a chipper, "Oh — film or TV?" If your answer is "neither" — that you're working on a novel — there is rarely a next question, just a pitying smile or a blank look and tensely pursed lips, as if you've just admitted to spending your days cataloging your collection of Victorian decorative thimbles. This can be disconcerting, but it is in fact the best thing about writing in Los Angeles: No one cares."
hmmm. my gal pal S has written recently on this subject, and finds claims that LA is not intellectual or even literary are enormously ignorant of the facts on the ground. it in fact pisses her off. i do not know LA well enough to speculate, but i'm sure those of you living in/around LA will want to chime in here. if i were a novelist though, and LA were a form of literary exile, i can see how it would be both a blessing and a curse.
