ever since actually studying the issue, i've been sympathetic to palestinian claims of territorial displacement, economic disenfranchisement, and overly militaristic israeli vengeance. there just really isn't a question about whether the state of israel has taken certain lands that was not historically its own, or inflicted pain and hardship upon millions of people simply for being arabs.
however, neither is there a question of israel's right to exist. and neither is there a question of whether suicide terrorism is a repugnant and horrid act. there is NO JUSTIFICATION for the taking of innocent life to make a political point.
and that's why i cannot support hamas, and shake my head in anger at the fact that they were democratically elected by the people of palestine. any progress that palestinians have made in getting the world to sympathize and help improve their plight is being rapidly turned back.
edward said -- that wonderful, wonderful scholar, teacher, and writer -- is no doubt turning over in his grave.
this will only end badly.
