Alice

i recently came across a gorgeous essay by calvin trillin, from a march issue of the new yorker. it's a tribute to his late wife, alice.

i won't pretend that i've read much of trillin's work, though i've certainly read it on occassion and find it funny and stylish. i also won't pretend that i knew anything about his wife, alice, who seemed to be a woman of amazing beauty, intelligence, and kindness.

i link to the article above simply because it's a stunning piece that captures what it's like to be a man loved by a woman of extraordinary presence:

"Decades later—after we had been married for more than thirty-five years, after our girls were grown—I still wanted to impress her. I still knew that if I ever disappointed her in some fundamental way—if I ever caused her to conclude that, after all was said and done, she should have said no when...I asked her if we could have dinner sometime—I would have been devastated."

trillin is winking at us guys, reminding us never to forget how wonderful our own alices are.

Agreed. This is a gorgeous article. I read it 15 or 20 times.
